I decided to write my son a letter for my his 17th birthday. Here it is..
My Sweet Boy, My Baby, my first born…
Oh how I love you. Happy 17th Birthday on this January 17th. I have racked my brain to come up with something to give you for your birthday, but like most 17-year-old boys, you gave me no ideas. I would buy you the world if I could. You are my heart, Charlie. So, I decided to write you a little note to tell you how much you mean to me. In one word: Everything.
You have no idea how much it means to me when you hug me in the parking lot of your school. You have no idea how much joy it brings me when you lay on my bed with me and watch my bad TV shows. You are an amazing human being, Char. You really are. You’ve been through so much and you’ve grown into a man with compassion and integrity. You are wise beyond your years, I think that has something to do with the fact that you were a very sick baby. I think you’ve touched the other side. I can feel it. I see it in you. You’re probably thinking, ‘Mom, you’re so weird,’ but guess what. I don’t care.
You went through a rough year this past year, Charlie, and you managed to keep up your grades at school, at a difficult school, AND keep your wits about you. You are understanding and very fair. You are very fair to everyone, I so admire that trait.
I feel your pain when you’re hurting and I feel your joy when you’re happy. We are THAT connected. When you were 2-years old I thought, ‘This is the best stage of his life,’ Then you were 8 and I thought, ‘It can’t get any better than this.’ Well, now you’re 17 and I can’t imagine that you will get any better, but I know you will. 17 years seems like 17 years to me because I have soaked up every moment of your life so far. Stay humble and keep your sense of humor. Your momma loves you so much.
