Every Friday Movie Mom Nell Minow visits Jeff and the Showgram to give us the lowdown on new movies coming to a theater near you!
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: “This movie is smart, fun and exciting and very, very funny,” says Movie Mom. (We think that means she loved it.) “The first scene in the movie is a huge battle with a space monster the size of a planet,” she says, “and it is super exciting and really visually fantastic, but the battle is not the focal point of the opening scene. The focus is on baby Groot dancing to “Mr. Blue Sky” by ELO.” The opening scene pretty much sets the tone of this movie and Baby Groot is definitely the star, says Movie Mom.
The Dinner: Richard Gere and Steve Coogan play estranged brothers who, with their wives Laura Linney and Rebecca Hall, go to a ridiculously decadent restaurant for dinner, in order to have a very difficult family conversation. This movie packs a lot of heavy issues into it: Mental health, family dysfunction, parenting and more. Movie Mom called it “a bit of a mess,” but said she appreciated the ambition of it. Here more about this movie in the podcast below.
A Dog’s Purpose: There was controversy when this movie first came out because it was said that one of the dogs had been mistreated, but those allegations have been proven false and Movie Mom urges you to watch it. She says don’t forget the tissues. The movie stars Dennis Quaid and is about a dog that is reincarnated, and through multiple lives, eventually finds his way back to his original owner.
Next week we’re talking about King Arthur and Snatched
