Sherry’s Blog: Music is Life to My Girls

I remember when I was a teenager, music was my life. I had my Sony Walkman with me (I know I am dating myself here) wherever I went.

Music was a big part of my life and I think that was one of the reasons I wanted to be a DJ.

There are certain songs that bring back memories, there are songs that make us sad, there are songs that make us fall in love, there are songs that help us through the bad times.

I saw this quote a few weeks ago:  “I am a teenager and my music will tell you more about me than my mouth ever could.”

My twin girls are 15-years old now, and I have noticed over the past year that they have been listening to music a lot more, and have become more passionate about artists and songs in general.

They will say, “Hey mom, listen to this song,” “Hey mom, this song is so true,” “Hey mom, the words to this song is amazing.”

We have started going to more concerts, and I love watching them at the shows. Sometimes I am watching their reaction to the songs more than I’m watching what’s onstage.

Over the summer, I took my daughter Alexis to see Def Leppard and she told me she had a great time. I have to pat myself on the back for that one because my job as a DJ mom is to have my children appreciate all generations of music.

Last Friday, I took my daughter Kera to the One Republic, James, Arthur, and Fitz and the Tantrums show. This was the one show she told me all summer long that she wanted to go to, so I had to get the tickets.

Me and Kera before the One Republic show.

We had such a great time together, and I have to say, I am a bigger James, Fitz and the Tantrums and One Republic fan now. I enjoyed watching her watch them on stage.

As parents of tweens and teens we always see them with their headphones on and we sometimes get annoyed. I used to, but now I understand music is their way of getting through life, just the way music helped us through.

I found this quote: “People haven’t always been there for me but music has.”

Here are some videos and pics from the show on Friday.
